Physical properties

Chloromethane (methyl chloride, chloromethane, CH3Cl), also known as methyl chloride, is a colorless and easily liquefied gas, which is liquefied and stored in steel cylinders under pressure. Is an organic halide. Slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in chloroform, ether, ethanol and acetone. Flammable, explosive and highly hazardous (see HG20660 "Classification of Toxicity Hazards and Explosion Hazards of Chemical Media in Pressure Vessels"). Non-corrosive. At high temperature (above 400°C) and under strong light, it reacts with water with methanol and hydrochloric acid, and generates phosgene when heated or exposed to flame.

Monochloromethane is a colorless, flammable and toxic gas, belonging to an organic halide, which can be produced by the substitution reaction between methane and chlorine, and can be further halogenated. Slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in ether, benzene, etc. It is flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air, with an explosion limit of 8.1% to 17.2% (volume). Methanol is generated when methyl chloride is hydrolyzed above 60°C.



1. It is used for the production of methylchlorosilane, tetramethyl lead, methylcellulose, etc., a small amount is used for the production of quaternary ammonium compounds, pesticides, and it is used as a solvent in the production of isobutyl rubber

2. Important raw materials for organic synthesis. Mainly used for the production of organosilicon compounds - methyl chlorosilane, and methyl cellulose. It is also widely used as solvent, extractant, propellant, refrigerant, local anesthetic, methylating agent, and used in the production of pesticides, medicines, spices, etc. About 80% of the methyl chloride produced in the world is used to produce methyl chlorosilane and tetramethyl lead, but the consumption of tetramethyl lead is gradually declining as antiknock compounds in gasoline are gradually being replaced by unleaded ones.

3. Mainly used as the raw material of organic silicon, also used as solvent, refrigerant, fragrance, etc.
