Physical Properties

Methyl chloride (CH3Cl), also known as chloromethane, is a colorless, easily liquefied gas that is stored under pressure in cylinders. It belongs to the organic halide group. It is slightly soluble in water and readily soluble in chloroform, ether, ethanol, and acetone. It is easily combustible, explosive, and highly hazardous (see HG20660 "Classification of toxicity hazards and explosion dangers of chemical media in pressure vessels"). It is non-corrosive. At high temperatures (above 400℃) and under strong light, it reacts with water to produce methanol and hydrochloric acid. Heating or exposure to flames produces phosgene.

Methyl chloride is a colorless, flammable, and toxic gas. It belongs to the organic halide group and can be produced by the substitution reaction of methane with chlorine, and can be further halogenated. It is slightly soluble in water and readily soluble in ether and benzene. It is flammable and can form an explosive mixture with air, with an explosion limit of 8.1%~17.2% (by volume). Methyl chloride hydrolyzes to methanol at temperatures above 60℃.

Uses

1. Used in the production of methyl chlorosilane, tetramethyllead, methyl cellulose, etc., and a small amount is used in the production of quaternary ammonium compounds and pesticides. It is used as a solvent in the production of isobutylene rubber.

2. An important raw material in organic synthesis. It is mainly used to produce organosilicon compounds - methyl chlorosilane, and methyl cellulose. It is also widely used as a solvent, extractant, propellant, refrigerant, local anesthetic, and methylation reagent in the production of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and fragrances. About 80% of the methyl chloride produced worldwide is used to produce methyl chlorosilane and tetramethyllead, but due to the gradual replacement of anti-knock compounds in gasoline with lead-free substances, the consumption of tetramethyllead is gradually decreasing.

3. Mainly used as a raw material for organosilicon, also used as a solvent, refrigerant, and fragrance.
