Applications

R-134a is the most widely used environmentally friendly refrigerant for medium and low temperature applications. Due to its excellent comprehensive performance, HFC-134a has become a very effective and safe substitute for CFC-12. It is mainly used in most areas where R-12 refrigerant is used, including: refrigerators, freezers, water dispensers, automobile air conditioners, central air conditioners, dehumidifiers, cold storage, commercial refrigeration, chillers, ice cream machines, refrigeration condensing units, etc. It can also be used as an aerosol propellant, medical aerosol, insecticide propellant, polymer (plastic) physical foaming agent, and magnesium alloy protective gas.

Storage and Transportation

R-134a refrigerant cylinders are pressurized containers. During storage, they should be kept away from fire and heat sources, and avoid direct sunlight. They should generally be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. During handling, they should be handled carefully to prevent damage to the cylinders, valves and other accessories.

Refrigerant Oil

Refrigerant oils commonly used with R-134a refrigerant include: Emkarate RL32H, RL68H, RL100H, RL170H, RL220H, ICEMATIC series, Solest series, etc. The type of refrigerant oil used in different equipment and applications should follow the recommendations of the refrigeration compressor and refrigeration (air conditioning) equipment manufacturers, or be determined according to the specific situation of the refrigeration compressor and refrigeration equipment, using refrigerant oil with equivalent design requirements. That is, choose an equivalent refrigerant oil.

Phase-out Schedule

R-134a belongs to the HFC class (non-ODS substances Ozone-depleting Substances)—therefore it does not damage the ozone layer at all. It is currently an environmentally friendly refrigerant recognized and recommended by the vast majority of countries in the world, and is currently the mainstream environmentally friendly refrigerant, widely used in the initial installation and re-addition during the maintenance process of new refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

Note

Although R-134a refrigerant is the most common choice for replacing Freon R-12 in newly installed refrigeration equipment, because the physicochemical properties, theoretical cycle performance and compressor oil of R-134a and R-12 are different, for the after-sales maintenance of refrigeration equipment initially installed with R-12 refrigerant, if it is necessary to add or replace the refrigerant, only R-12 can still be added, and R-134a cannot usually directly replace R-12.
